UNESCO Chair on Natural Disasters Management

The UNESCO Chair on Natural Disasters Management was established on June 14, 2014. The purpose of this Chair is to develop knowledge and capacities in  the Field of Natural disasters including prevention and mitigating the adverse impacts of hasards and lessen  possibility of disaster occurrence. in this regard enhancing disaster preparedness for effective response at all levels and to «Build Back Better» in recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction in the aftermath of a disaster are Key approches to be folloewd. Thus making the Resilient nations and communities to the disasters is necessary. The chair shall act as a hub for conducting research and studies on disaster risk management combined with activities in the context of sustainable development at national, regional and international level. this chair shall facilitate promotion of a disaster prevention and education culture on disaster risk in the region, sub-region and even worldwide. the chair shall promote cooperation between academic, scientific and research entities and networks and private sector to develope new products and services to help to reduce disaster risk in the region. the chair programme in disaster management has been prioritized in the Islamic Republic of iran,s fifth Economic- social development plan encouraging human capacity- building and human resource Rising in disaster risk reduction and disaster risk management as two fundamental elements of sustainable development.

Natural disasters do not respect borders and are mostly similar characteristics as far as neighbouring countries are concerned. therefor, the exchange of knowledge and experiences in disaster risk management among academic and research institutions in the region help achivement of goals in terms of urban and rural safety and sustainable development of the country.

The main objective of the UNESCO chair programme is to carry out studies on natural disaster risk reduction in Iran and the region with the aim of finding scientific methods of developing an integrated regional preparedness and response mechanism including through transfer of technology and cutting-edge know-how.

It is also worth mentioning that intercultural dialogue leads to the flow and allocation of resources to promote resilience of countries to natural disasters and sustainable development ensurance in Iran and other countries of the region.
